LITURGICAL VARIETY

On Good Friday morning this year I attended Tenebrae (Matins and Lauds) in London's Brompton Oratory. I heard the ancient Lamentations sung (tones based on chants which pre-date the birth of Christ). The Service was entirely in Latin with the exception of the Readings and the choir sang the Tenebrae Responsories of Victoria. For me the highlight of their singing was the pianissimo top G entry of the Sopranos at Si est dolor in the Responsory Caligaverunt oculi mei. It was superb and entered straight into my soul. The Oratory has a superb choir (women and men) and it was a joy to listen and pray with them.
