One of the marks of a fine choir is how they handle dynamic variations. Have you ever found yourself blown out of your seat by a sudden forte, when you were expecting a gradual building of sound - a crescendo? Take Bruckner's Christus Factus Est for instance - how often do you hear really fine crescendos in it, as the composer intended? The best performance can be spoilt by a small detail like this.
