You're sitting in the church, listening to a choir singing ... what? Have you any idea what they're singing about? And - more to the point - have they any idea what they're singing about? I was chatting to a singer recently. We were talking about the problems of singing translations, particularly singing Latin polyphony in modern languages. She told me (she's a teacher) that she always tells her pupils to recite poetry as if they had written it themselves. What wise advice! And it also applies to all texts that we sing.
