MUSIC AND THE EXTRAORDINARY RITE OF MASS - PART I (POLYPHONY)
The Extraordinary rite is the Old Tridentine Mass of St Pius V said completely in Latin. It was revised extensively as a result of the work of Vatican 2. The Pope has issued an order saying that he wants what he calls the Extraordinary Rite to be available to everyone who wants it. As a general rule the music traditionally associated with the Extraordinary Rite of Mass is Gregorian Chant and Polyphony. Viennese music - that is, the Church Music of Mozart, Schubert, Haydn. and composers of that period - is also widely used and a certain amount of contemporary work is sung.
