Choirs and their directors can often lose sight of the fact that their work is spiritual, it isn't just a performance. Obviously, there must be the aspect of performance in their singing but this is only one part of a much wider spiritual vision. It's difficult for the choirmaster to get the balance right and it must be continually worked at.
