TOWARDS ACHIEVING A COMMON HYMN REPERTOIRE

Isn't it very annoying when you go into a church and you don't know the hymns being sung? Those learned by the young are very different to those known by the old. Recently I've been amazed to discover that the traditional Catholic hymns are unknown by young people. It appears to me that a whole tradition of hymnody is being lost. There used to be a basic repertoire of hymns in the Catholic church – this no longer seems to apply. Even something like Missa de Angelis and Credo III are known only to the elderly. A sense of communal worship across the generations is being lost and this depressing situation needs to be rectified.
