I have been thinking about the huge amount of music that has been written for Christian worship. It originates before the birth of Christ and is flourishing today in many forms. God never does anything on a small scale and the inspiration of the Holy Spirit has resulted in many millions of compositions - something totally beyond my comprehension. We must always thank God for the gift of music. Music demonstrates in sound the history of the church. Painting, mosaic, sculpture are also a huge testament to the growth of belief. Their different styles, as in music, are an extraordinary affirmation of the existence of a loving Creator; when we choose music for worship we need to view our selection as part of the long and ever-growing heritage of Christian music. This will affect what we choose - we must look far beyond the local and into the very different cultures that have developed in the world. There is much more than the European tradition, fine though it is.
